| Rosh Hodesh Av |
The dark sky of Rosh Hodesh is especially appropriate for the month of Av, the month of destruction and loss. But not everything is black, because the crescent of the new moon has appeared, and with it a sliver of hope that after the fast, we will be comforted.

Tradition assigns Psalm 19 to Shavuot.
The brilliant sun near the horizon of Sinai silently testifies to the wonder of creation while the Hebrew letters descending to earth form the first syllable of the Ten Commandments that which was, by some interpretations, all the assembled people heard. They are pronounced “ah,” the quietest of sounds, reminiscent of the still, small voice Elijah heard on the same mountain. Will we hear that voice today?
פסוק מפרשת וילך שקראנו בשבת שובה ביחד עם פסוק מתהילים קל שקוראים בעשרת ימי תשובה. בלילה החשוך והסוער ביותר, שומרים יודעים שהשחר יפציע. הם פחות בטוחים שמחליפם יגיע בזמן. כאשר אנחנו מחכים לאלוהים, אין ביטחון כלל, במיוחד בעידן של הסתר פנים. אך אפילו המשמרת הארוכה ביותר עוברת יותר בקלות עם שותף-עמית. יהי רצון שנדע להיות נוכחים אחד לשני בלילות הארוכים של המתנה, גם הסוערים ביותר.

A verse from Deuteronomy 31, which we read on Shabbat Shuva, with a verse from Psalm 130, which is read during the 10 days of repentance. Even on the darkest night, even in a storm, guards know that dawn will come. It is less certain that their replacement will arrive on time. When we wait for God nothing is certain, especially in an age of hidden countenance. Yet even the longest guard-shift passes more easily with a partner. May we always be present for each other in the long nights of waiting, no matter how stormy.

| Rosh Hodesh Sivan |
In honor of the first day of Sivan, verse from Psalm 104, the Psalm for Rosh Hodesh, connected to my thoughts on the active work need to produce both bread and Torah. The connection to the giving-kindness and redemption in the Book of Ruth is not, in my mind, a coincidence. May you have a good month, by whatever name you give it: Sivan, Shawwal, June....

| Second day of Passover |

| Third day of Passover |
Psalm 80 is the daily psalm for the third day of Passover, according to the custom of the Vilna Gaon. In it, Israel is likened to a grape vine planted and tended by God. The past redemption serves as the foundation for the expectation, the demand that there be another, future redemption. Reading it during Passover is a powerful admission that, despite the Exodus, we still live in a world yet to be redeemed.
The quote in the picture is verse 15: "Look down from heaven and see; take care of this vine."

Quoted in the picture are verses 39 and 45: "God spread a cloud to screen them and a fire to light up the night…so that they might keep God’s statues and observe the Torah. Hallelujah!"

| Fifth day of Passover |
Psalm 135 is the daily psalm for the fifth day of Passover, according to the custom of the Vilna Gaon. Similar to the other daily psalms for Passover, this chapter mentions the Exodus but also emphasis the divine power we experience in nature.
The quote in the picture is from verses 6-7: "Whatever the Eternal desires He does in heaven and earth, in the seas and all the depths. God makes clouds rise from the end of the earth, and lightning for the rain; Releasing the wind from God's vaults."

| Sixth day of Passover |
Psalm 66 is the daily psalm for the sixth day of Passover, according to the custom of the Vilna Gaon. It expresses confidence in God’s power to protect and redeem despite present (or vividly remembered) suffering. Just as God parted the sea, God continues to keep our footsteps steady. The quote in the picture is from verses 6 and 9: God turned the sea into dry land; they crossed the river on foot… God has granted us life, and not let our feet slip.

I found The Bodies of God to be a very powerful book but don't read it unless you are ready to re-evaluate assumptions about Biblical or ancient Israelite belief.
